We made it so the sorcerer could fight using melee combat and the fighter and rogue could throw projectile weapons. From this, we made a move to make the characters share a few more skills. After a bunch of play testing, we found that people responded better to scenarios where they could always play the character they wanted, and weren't being "forced" to switch. However, when we first got switching on the fly into the game using this framework, it wasn't as fun as we hoped. The idea had been that the player would switch often, treating the characters like different weapons each with strengths and weaknesses. At first, we assumed that making each character only good at their particular skill would be best therefore, the fighter had no projectile weapons, the rogue had no combos, and the sorcerer had no melee attacks, just projectile spells. The sorcerer would be a projectile thrower with both offensive and defensive spells. ![]() The rogue could sneak and jump and would be great at killing single enemies using her sneak attack. The fighter would be good at fighting groups of enemies. ![]() Unfortunately, the gameplay in Demon Stone, while fun in spots, is really basic and for the most part not very challenging.Looking carefully at the D&D 3.5 edition rules, we determined that a party made up of a fighter, rogue and sorcerer would offer us great variety of gameplay. Forgotten Realms isn't nearly as popular, and I'd wager that most of the people that are interested in the game are looking for gameplay first. This style of gameplay was more appropriate for The Two Towers, since the popularity of the movies gave that game a mainstream appeal. While it's cool that you can upgrade your weapons, armor, and accessories for more powerful attacks, you're still mashing buttons at the end of the day. Unfortunately, they are few and far between, which leaves you with a game that's largely comprised of button mashing. There are some portions of Demon Stone where you'll have to use each character's abilities to defeat an enemy. For the rest of the game she plays like an underpowered fighter that can jump. If there are shadows about, Zhai's stealthy abilities allow her to pull off awesome one-hit kills. Illius has the best projectile attacks and nice support spells if you like hanging out in the background while the others do the dirty work then he's your man. Fans of the Realms will surely enjoy the game, but those that are just looking for a good hack-'n-slash fest will find an uneven effort that's brilliant at times and mediocre at others. Demon Stone is certainly full of fast-paced (albeit simple) action and rife with great storytelling (that's hampered by mediocre dialog and a lack of character development). The developers attempted to combine heavy action and deep storytelling in this game, and they've succeeded in both.
